Prathama was born to a family where she learned about social service from her nearest ones. Her grandfather himself was actively involved in helping people in need along with her mother and father. The seed of prioritising the needs of others before one’s own had been sowed in her heart since childhood

At school Prathama participated in almost types of co curriculars which made her a confident person. Prathama often heard girls whisper the word “PERIOD” and giggle among themselves .Menstruation was an unknown topic for her till then. With time she realised that “Period”, “pads” and such words need to be said in hushed tones. At home Prathama had a supportive mother who didn’t believe in taboos and made her understand the reality and scientific explanations behind them. Prathama once was humiliated by a teacher since she used the word period and not “that time of the month”.

She completed her English honours from Kolkata and moved back to her hometown Jamshedpur, where she joined the Rotaract Club of Steel City. In her first few days there she was recognised by the then President of Rotary Steel City Rotarian Nikita Mehta, who introduced Prathama to Menstrupedia and since then there was no looking back. Prathama got her training under the most inspiring Aditi Gupta and there she understood the need for awareness about Menstruation. She heard about the atrocities that most girls in our country face during their periods . They were labelled “Impure” and confined to a small room as if they had committed some heinous crime. Prathama, with the support of another educator and her friend Rishu Ranjan was now set out on their path of eradicating this mentality. Menstrupedia gave Prathama the wings and the opportunity to bring in the change for better.
