Periods are one of the most taboo subjects in the world. More than half of the world’s population experiences menstruation monthly, but why is something so common also so stigmatized? Cultural attitudes toward menstruation can have serious effects beyond just an embarrassing moment in gym class. For some girls and women, stigma around menstruation can affect their access to education, proper hygiene, and more.

To raise awareness for Women’s Health Week (this week) and Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28), the team at Column Five partnered created a new interactive, People for Periods, which seeks to celebrate and raise awareness around an important but often forgotten part of women’s health.

The interactive addresses everything from the historical factors that have contributed to the silence surrounding periods, to the economics of menstruation, to periods in pop culture (you’ll be surprised to learn when the word “period” was first used on TV). It’s an educational and important tool to understand how this issue directly impacts the health and quality of life for menstruating people.

“We believe that even if you’re not a person with a period, you can still be a person who champions healthy, happy, shame-free periods,” Column Five says.
